The Greeks incorporated random selection into certain government functions, and the Romans relied on it for both military and civic matters. Even today, when we use the phrase "drawing lots," we are echoing those ancient traditions.

This is where things get truly interesting. Behavioral scientists have discovered something unexpected: we often use random choices without even realizing it.

Take the famous coin-flip experiment. Participants are told to flip a coin to decide between two difficult options. But once the coin lands, something happens. Many people feel a sudden pang of disappointment with the result.
